The saxophone was invented by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax. It was designed to combine aspects of the trumpet, clarinet and flute into one instrument. Initially gaining popularity through its use in military marching bands, it rapidly spread to many areas of the world where it was approached and adopted in a way unique to that culture.
