The kantele is the national instrument of Finland. It is a box harp instrument belonging to the South East Baltic box zither family known as the Baltic psaltery, along with Estonian kannel, Latvian kokles, Lithuanian kanklės and Russian gusli. It has a distinctive bell-like sound with between 5 and 15 strings and is either plucked or strummed with a small stick.
